Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 December 22 [2]The featured image shows a long exposure image of the launch of NASA's IXPE observatory to low Earth orbit. The launch was on a Falcon 9 Rocket by SpaceX. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Launch of the IXPE Observatory Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Jordan Sirokie Explanation: [4]Birds don't fly this high. [5]Airplanes don't go this fast. The [6]Statue of Liberty weighs less. No [7]species other than [8]human can even comprehend [9]what is going on, nor could any [10]human just a [11]millennium ago. The launch of a [12]rocket bound for space is an event that [13]inspires awe and challenges description. [14]Pictured here, a [15]SpaceX [16]Falcon 9 rocket [17]lifted off from [18]Kennedy Space Center, [19]Florida earlier this month carrying the [20]Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). [21]IXPE is scheduled to observe high-energy objects such as [22]neutron stars, black holes, and the [23]centers of distant galaxies to better determine the [24]physics and [25]geometries that create and control them. From a standing start, the 300,000+ kilogram [26]rocket ship lifted [27]IXPE up to circle the [28]Earth, where the outside air is too thin to breathe. [29]Rockets bound for space are now [30]launched from somewhere on Earth [31]every few days.
