Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2022 February 27 [2]The featured image is a newly remasteed version of one of the most famous pictures ever taken: the Earth rising behind the Moon from Apollo 8. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Earthrise 1: Historic Image Remastered Image Credit: [3]NASA, [4]Apollo 8 Crew, [5]Bill Anders; Processing and [6]License: Jim Weigang Explanation: "Oh my God! Look at that picture over there! Here's the Earth coming up. Wow is that pretty!" Soon after [7]that pronouncement, 50 years ago today, [8]one of the most famous images ever taken was snapped from the orbit of [9]the Moon. Now known as "[10]Earthrise", the iconic image shows the Earth rising above the limb of the Moon, as [11]taken by the crew of [12]Apollo 8. But the well-known [13]Earthrise image was actually the [14]second image taken of the [15]Earth rising above the lunar limb -- it was just the first in color. With modern digital technology, however, the real first Earthrise image -- originally in black and white -- has [16]now been remastered to have the combined resolution and color of the [17]first [18]three [19]images. Behold! The [20]featured image is a close-up of the picture that Apollo 8 astronaut [21]Bill Anders was [22]talking about. Thanks to modern technology and [23]human [24]ingenuity, now we can all see it. (Historical note: A [25]different historic black & white image of the Earth setting behind the lunar limb was [26]taken by the robotic [27]Lunar Orbiter 1 two years earlier.)
