Simply purchase Internet access from another Internet provider, and use a telnet or rlogin command to cris.com. Then subscribe to BBS Direct, and connect to Laura's Lair Central. You call your Internet provider with a terminal package that supports upload/download via Smodem, Zmodem, etc. Then you either rlogin or telnet to cris.com Example: rlogin -8 cris.com or telnet cris.com The success of telnet/rlogin downloads and uploads is dependent on the telnet/rlogin client that is running on your Internet provider's side. Because the telnet/rlogin client is not under our control, you will need to try the following and go with whatever works best for you. We recommend using rlogin if your Internet provider supports it. Basically, telnet was not created to use for downloading. But telnet does allow you to download using Kermit as the protocol. Kermit is very slow, so this is why rlogin is recommended. If your version of telnet supports them, there are some options which may help. They are set at the telnet prompt after the connection has been made. They are: telnet> set binary ; try to set 8 bit mode telnet> mode character ; go into character mode telnet> set escape ^S ; change ^] to ^S Optional suggestions: (try this way) This set of sequences seems to work best with SunOS telnet set flushoutput off set escape off toggle binary open cris.com The Zmodem and Smodem protocols seem to work best. Smodem is recommended for telnet sessions. Downloading works just as if you called the BBS directly. DOWNLOAD FASTER TO YOUR INTERNET DIRECTORY Download directly to your Internet Home Directory through the Concentric Network Direct Connection to Laura's Lair Central This direct connection now allows you to upload or download at a faster rate directly to or from your CRC Internet Home Directory. Why would I do that? This new feature allows users to download at a faster rate to their personal directory. This is possible because the Concentric Network is available at 14.4 Kbs, and the connection between the Data Center and the BBS is available at 19.2 Kbs. Also, Customers connecting to the Concentric Network by telneting to cris.com will be able to FTP files from their personal home directory. This will increase the speed of downloads and alleviate slow CPS rates with Kermit downloads. This feature is also available for customers dialing into the Concentric Network. You may download to your Internet directory, then download from the Internet directory to your computer. This will allow you to limit your time on the BBS and take full advantage of the Unlimited time offer provided by the Concentric Network and BBS Direct. How do I DOWNLOAD to the Internet gateway? 1. The additional menu is hot-keyed. You will NOT NEED TO HIT ENTER AFTER SELECTING A CHOICE. 2. The upload option will prompt the user for the name of the file to upload to the BBS. This file may contain path information, but cannot contain ../ or start with /. 3. Wildcards are NOT supported. 4. Downloads are not auto-detecting, so the user will have to initiate the download. 5. Downloading batch transfers are supported, and nothing different has to be done to accommodate these. 6. If a file already exist, the download will be aborted. This is true even for partial files. So Zmodem resume downloads, will not work. The user will have to go into the Internet gateway, and delete the partial file, and then download the file. 7. The Quit option, disconnects the user from the BBS by selecting "Q" from the menu. This option may be used at any time while connected to the BBS. 8. Any key other than the three options on the menu, will return the user to their current BBS session. 9.
